Reader participation: Sick day
I woke up this morning with a raging sore throat, random temperature swings, and the feeling that all of my limbs are made of bean bags. My head feels, if I may say, like an orange on a toothpick. It’s unpleasant. But it does mean I’m spending the day under a quilt on the couch, and what else do I have to kill the time besides a few hours with my DVD player?
So, I ask you, readers: what are your favorite sick-day movies? If you had a day or two of forced down-time coupled with slightly reduced intellectual power and temporary narcolepsy, what would you watch?

Gone in 60 Seconds. I have literally watched that movie hundreds of times without being bored of it yet. Not an Oscar winner, but definitely re-watchable.

The words “not an Oscar winner, but definitely re-watchable” pretty much sum up the perfect sick-day movie.
Good call.

After having my wisdom teeth removed when I was seventeen, I came home to find that my mom had rented, for my viewing pleasure, all five “Planet of the Apes” movies. I don’t know who suggested this to her, or where she got the idea that I’d be at all interested in them. The next three days were a dizzying mess of percocet, Jell-O pudding cups, and simian tyranny. It ended up being that kind of transcendental experience that makes hippies think they “get” Eastern religions.
Also, the best sick day movie is “Tombstone.” It even manages to make sickness seem bad-ass!

Mmm, excellent call. I was thinking Philadelphia, or something, but you’re totally right about Doc Holliday.
Also, I didn’t even know there were five Planet of the Apes movies. However, the thought of watching them while sedated and eating only Jell-o is kind of hilarious.

You know, I’ve never seen that. It’s on my Netflix queue, though.

My all time favorite: It’s A Wonderful Life. ALWAYS helps me feel good!

I’m going to have to vote for Return to Me or You’ve Got Mail. I have seen both of them 1,000 times, and I never get tired of them. Never ever.
I’m sitting her looking at the movies on my shelf now, and I think Garden State and Big Fish would also be strong contenders. I haven’t watched them as much, but I do love them so.

Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea. My mom bought those for me when I broke my leg and pretty much didn’t leave the couch for a week. I was 21 at the time, but I still love to watch those movies on a cold winter day!
