Fame Done Right: Will Smith
Will Smith must have been one of those kids who was good at everything: school, sports, girls, music. Either that, or he was a total mess, and is cashing in his karmic chips as an adult. The point is, even when he’s doing wrong, he appears to be able to do no wrong. See?
Smith is a hard guy to peg: a rapper-turned-sitcom-actor-turned-action-star-turned-romantic-lead, who also writes children’s books and carefully avoids the tabloids in his spare time. He’s made a couple of bad movies (Wild Wild West), quite a few middle-rangers (I, Robot and Hitch), and a couple of true blockbusters (Independence Day and Men in Black), and was nominated for an Academy Award for his portrayal of Mohammed Ali. And the weird part is, he remains likeable, no matter what. Nobody hates Will Smith, because even when his movies are bad, there’s nothing to hate. He’s just that cool, or that charming, or that…something.
He has a new movie coming out, The Pursuit of Happyness, based on the true story of a San Francisco man and his young son trying to stave off poverty. Normally, I might be tempted to skip this one, especially when there are so many other, less treacly movies to see. But Will Smith in a feel-good tearjerker? I’m pretty sure I’ll be there.
Keep it up, Will Smith. We like you, and so does everybody else.
