Coming Soon-ish: The Golden Compass
It’s coming! I have mixed feelings about The Golden Compass as a novel–as a written work that is supposed to have been written and edited by literate adults, really–but I firmly believe that it will translate beautifully to film. The new trailer shows some good bits and pieces, lets us see how all of the casting is shaping up, and gets the adrenaline going on at least a steady drip. Really, it’s all about the polar bears for me. Polar bears, people! Armored polar bears in London! Also, I would like to be Eva Green for a day and fly around on harnesses with a broom and a bow and arrow. Wouldn’t I make a good witch?

I can’t wait for this film to come out and it looks awesome. But why do you have mixed feelings about the novel? Yes it is written by a literate adult, and it shows as it’s a beautifully plotted story with great characters. May I ask, what is your problem with the book?

I have nothing to say about this movie, because I know nothing of it, nor the book. I just want to be 12 years old and laugh at the advertisement, which says “3 out of 4 woman will get HPV and won’t know it” with famous paintings of women underneath it, one of which is the Mona Lisa. This absolutely cracks me up.

Dave, you may indeed ask! I agree with you that the plot and characters in The Golden Compass are great–there’s a lot that I like about the story–but Pullman’s prose makes me crazy. It frustrates me that he has such good things to say and then says them in a way that screams “freshman writing seminar!” to me. That’s why I’m so excited about the movie–we get to see the story play out without all of his extra narration, which sounds just about perfect to me.

Sarah, you NEVER KNOW! It’s sneaky, the HPV.
….whatever.
This blog is totally about klassy chicks.

Ah ok, well that’s your personal opinion and you’re entitled to it. I thought you may have a problem with the anti-religious overtones to the books which I think were going to be taken out of the movies for fear of offending the American bible belt.
Personally I like Pullman’s prose, maybe it’s an English thing
